During the CIL process, gold is leached from the ore using an alkaline cyanide solution. The resulting gold cyanide complex ions are then concentrated and separated from the slurry by adsorbing onto activated carbon. Elution is the next step in the process, whereby the adsorption of the gold cyanide complex onto carbon is reversed.
A slurry of ground ore, water and a weak cyanide solution is fed into large steel leach tanks where the gold and silver are dissolved. Following this leaching process the slurry passes through six adsorption tanks containing carbon granules which adsorb the gold and silver. This process removes 93% of the gold and 70% of the silver.
Flow is regulated manually by means of ball valves. Slurry pH pH modification is achieved by adding lime to the ore prior to milling which makes the slurry alkaline (high pH). The pH level in the tanks is monitored regularly by the process technician responsible for the CIL circuit.
